Blueberry Acreage Expansion in Canada

Did you know that blueberries rank as the leading fruit commodity in Canada in terms of both growing area and farm gate value? Over the past decade, the acreage dedicated to both wild (low bush) and cultivated (high bush) blueberries has seen a notable increase.

According to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the USDA, the acreage devoted to blueberries, particularly wild blueberries, has experienced significant growth driven by rising consumer demand and prices. Cultivated blueberry production areas have expanded by 27% in the last ten years.

In 2021, wild blueberry acreage reached its highest level in the past decade. Blueberries accounted for 59% of the Canadian fruit commodity market share by growing area, far surpassing apples at just 13%.

The primary region for cultivated blueberries is in western Canada, specifically British Columbia (BC), which accounts for 96% of production. However, this only represents 15% of the total blueberry acreage nationwide. The remaining 85% is concentrated in the eastern region, particularly in Quebec, where all wild blueberry production takes place.
